This website was specifically created to assist you in your Onboarding experience by providing you with the most current onboarding information available!

We will provide you with a brief overview of our military and civilian structures as well as offer you an understanding of key onboarding processes and conversation starters when establishing a rapport with your Sponsor/Supervisor.

In short, the information will support your integration with your first duty station! Additionally, we will provide you with links to other services that Hanscom is offering Newcomers. Again, congratulations and welcome to your new career!

In-processing

Woman using a laptopThere are a few important buildings to check while In-processing. Please talk with your Sponsor for more information regarding:
  • The Brown Building
  • Taking the Oath of Office
  • Newcomers’ Orientation
  • Your Office Building

Newcomer orientation and onboarding e-mails

As you might have already noticed by now, you have gained multiple In-processing e-mails from several organizations.

Using HBIK as an example, you will be in contact with:

  • 66ABG for joining Hanscom

  • PK for becoming a Contract Specialist and

  • HBI for working in your new division

Be aware that much of the In-processing information aligns with one another, yet differences can still occur as procedures change. Should this occur, please reach out to your Sponsor with additional questions.

Above all, please remember this going forward:

The In-processing procedure can be a lot, but you are on your way to joining the Government! Our guiding word going forward from now (and as you In-process) is... patience.

Our Acquisition Structure

This website includes the Air Force Core Values which should guide all Airmen, including civilian Airmen, towards becoming their best selves. The Major Command for Developing, Acquiring, and Sustaining the U.S. Air Force's Air Power is Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). AFMC encompasses six Air Force Centers, including the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), which performs the role of delivering affordable and sustainable air power capabilities to the U.S. Air Force and our allies. AFLCMC is comprised of multiple Directorates across the United States. At Hanscom AFB the primary Directorates are the Digital Directorate and the Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence and Networks Directorate (C3I&N).

The first two weeks

  • After gaining your Common Access Card (CAC) and taking your Oath of Office, you should receive your electronic equipment (e.g. Government Laptop) during the first two weeks.

  • Once you have received your Laptop, equipment, and general office supplies from your Division, talk with your Sponsor to gain the contact information of your Supervisor and schedule an in-person / virtual meeting to introduce yourself. This should occur on or after your first official day, but preferably within the first pay period (the first two weeks on duty).

  • Remember: Patience is key and schedules with many different individuals can take time to arrange. There may be times you are waiting for things to occur and a new task to come your way, but this is normal at first. We recommend actively engage in tasks assigned to you until you are able to reach your Supervisor to gain further instructions. Give e-mails a 24 hour period to be answered and follow up should they go unanswered for more than 48 hours. Your Sponsor will remain available during this time. So should you require any support, please feel free to continue asking your Sponsor.

  • We recommend asking your Supervisor and/or Sponsor about required courses for Newcomers as well as which Training sites and Universities are available to you to begin your formal training

Where am I in the Acquisition structure?

WHO WILL I BE WORKING WITH?

Although working as a Civilian within the Air Force under a Government Salary (GS) pay grade, it is still beneficial for you to understand the Rank and Insignia structure of your military counterparts.

In this section you are able to see a list of Enlisted and Officer ranks, titles, and insignia. While referring to your civilian superiors as Mr. or Ms. as well as his or her surname, you will be required to address e-mails to a member of the armed services by their rank and surname.

However, as a Civilian Airmen, you are not required to salute when meeting a military service member.

WHERE DO I MEET MY HANSCOM SPONSOR

Once your Sponsor has reached out to you, he or she will continue by scheduling a meeting with you.

If you do not yet have a Common Access Card (CAC) at this point, mention this to your Sponsor and see about setting up an appointment next to the Hanscom AFB Visitor Control Center to get signed onto the Installation. If you have a CAC, please mention this to your Sponsor and arrange a time and location for your first meeting.

It may be helpful to use a GPS and map to Building 1617, Old Bedford Rd, Hanscom AFB, MA 01731. Parking is next to the building.

BASE FACILITIES

Please ask your Sponsor about important Buildings regarding Newcomers' Orientation, where to obtain your Common Access Card (CAC), where you will Take your Oath of Office, and which Building will be your primary Office Building.

At this point, we further recommend you take this opportunity to ask your Sponsor for a tour of the Installation, learn about some additionally important locations and/or buildings, and physically see these buildings as early as possible.

Also consider asking your Sponsor and/or Supervisor to provide you with your division's current Telework / In-Office status and discuss how you can best fit into your division strategy to begin working as a member of the Team!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE USAF

The official U.S. Air Force birthday is September 18, 1947.

The years leading to the Air Force's official creation placed it through a series of designations:

  • Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909)

  • Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914)

  • United States Army Air Service (1918)

  • United States Army Air Corps (1926)

  • United States Army Air Forces (1941)

Although the U.S. Air Force was established in 1947, the first aircraft for the U.S. military was still purchased in 1909. This procurement makes the Wright brothers' Military Flyer which is also known as the "Signal Corps One" the first aviation related acquisition for the U.S. military.

In addition to the Air Force Core Values, the United States Air Force also has its own official Air Force Theme Song "Off we go into the wild Blue Yonder" as well as the U.S. Air Force Airman's Creed which apply to all Airmen.

If interested, please take a few moments to read into the history of the Air Force in the links provided  below. (This is not mandatory and there will be no test on this topic).
