Fit to Fight: How AIMWTS and AFMOWAP Revolutionized Air Crew Medical Readiness

The Air Force medical and operational communities previously relied on an outdated, email-based process for handling flying waiver appeals. This legacy method created administrative bottlenecks, delayed communication and limited visibility into key data.

For air crew awaiting medical clearance, delays created uncertainty and kept personnel grounded. This affected Airmen’s well-being and reduced squadron readiness. To overcome these challenges, the Air Force Medical and Omnibus Web Application Pool (AFMOWAP) Program Management Office (PMO) led efforts to modernize this process through the AFMOWAP portfolio.

AFMOWAP is a centralized portfolio that provides real-time medical readiness tracking for 55,740 users, including flight surgeons across the Active Duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve. Within this portfolio, the Aeromedical Information Management Waiver Tracking System (AIMWTS), used to manage flying waivers, was modernized.

Released April 30, 2026, the update transitioned the legacy email-based waiver appeal process into a centralized AIMWTS module. Appeals are now routed automatically to Air Force Medical Command (AFMEDCOM), which manages aerospace medicine and physical duties across the Department of the Air Force.

By replacing fragmented inboxes, AIMWTS now provides the medical community with immediate access to auditable data. The system offers real-time visibility that supports medical users, allowing administrative users and flight surgeons to reduce delays and verify air crew mission readiness. It also supports faster return to duty and ensures deploying personnel meets required medical standards.

Automating the waiver appeal process has reduced uncertainty for Airmen and cut processing times from weeks to days by streamlining routing to AFMEDCOM.

The update supports continuous process improvement efforts and enhances readiness by providing commanders with timely, accurate information on force health.
