The Department of the Air Force (DAF) has modernized the delivery of mission-essential software with the successful migration of the Air Force Center for Electronic Distribution of Systems (AFCEDS) to a cloud-based SharePoint platform.

As the single, authoritative source for vital software, The AFCEDS transition from a legacy physical server environment marks a shift for secure and efficient distribution, directly enhancing the readiness and lethality of the DAF and its global partners.

The migration to the SharePoint cloud solution provides warfighters with significantly enhanced capabilities. Unlike a traditional website hosted in a single, physical location, the SharePoint platform leverages a network of datacenters. This architecture acts as a Content Delivery Network (CDN), catching data in multiple regions worldwide.

For warfighters, this means they connect to a geographically closer server, reducing the latency and delays common when accessing a centralized site from overseas or over a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This overhaul included the transfer of over four terabytes of data and provides worldwide availability, removing previous limitations that created bottlenecks in delivering vital data. The new system’s worldwide accessibility ensures that users anywhere now experience faster and more reliable downloads.

From a user standpoint, the operational impact has been immediate. In a significant early success, Air Combat Command (ACC) migrated 25 GB of critical security patch data to a platform, a move that expedited operating system upgrades for systems five times faster than before and supported the advancement of Combat Air Force’s Windows 11 upgrade initiative, ensuring full compliance with U.S. Cyber Command directives. To further streamline support for its IT administrators, the AFCEDS team also developed a centralized SharePoint ticketing system that has cut work order response times in half.

This modernization effort aligns with the Air Force’s goals to improve efficiency and security. Transitioning to an enterprise-hosted service will reduce annual costs by $20,000, a savings that helped preserve the program after it faced potential discontinuation.

Decommissioning legacy servers eliminated hardware and maintenance costs and improved network security.

The updated software distribution model has improved reliability, speed and access for users. The changes support the Air Force’s logistics and cyber operations and its core missions.
