WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFLCMC) - The Peer Support Program (PSP) is seeking both service members and civilians at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to provide fellow Airmen more pathways to find support and other resources.

Senior Master Sergeant Jacob O. Wireman, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s First Sergeant, said the program leverages existing unit and workplace relationships to get people connected with resources if they need it. “The goal is to tear down the barriers to the care, the access to care, to the helping agencies, and the best way to do that is to find people that are already trusted within their units,” Wireman stated.

Wireman said that the program’s participants take their new knowledge of helping resources and agencies back to their home units and offices, enabling them to help wingmen close to them especially since AFLCMC workforce is so large and across multiple locations. “[T]hese peers that are already embedded in the unit, people already know these individuals,” Wireman said. And as trusted team members, hope is people will “be more willing to go to them with some concerns, or a request to seek some of these helping agencies.”

In its current version, the PSP volunteers attend a one-day, in-person training session at Wright-Patterson, led by the base’s Integrated Resilience Office. Spots are still available for PSP training on 17 June 2026. The Integrated Resilience Office will host additional training August through October, with exact dates to be announced. The training sessions provide volunteers with an overview of existing helping agencies and resources that are available, but service members and civilians may not know about. (For other operation locations, contact your unit First Sergeant about similar training opportunities.)

Requirements to volunteer include:
  • A genuine desire to help peers in need
  • Statement of Understanding signed by unit leadership or supervisor
  • Attending one day training
  • Agreement to attend an annual refresher training
During a PSP training session in May at Wright-Patt, a mix of civilian and active-duty volunteers shared a variety of reasons why they were taking the training. Some had utilized helping agencies themselves. For one volunteer, the training was a way to help become a better leader by knowing how to support people they manage. Others said they wanted to support their unit’s First Sergeants by being another pathway to reach assistance.

PSP volunteer Brad Schlessman said the knowledge from the day’s training would give him more ways to assist his team members. “I thought this would be a good opportunity to just get more exposure to these programs [and] be available to help if the situation arises.”
