WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, OH -- The 101 Critical Days of Summer Campaign is here to keep you and your family safe during your well-deserved break. This period is a time for enjoying outdoor activities and time with loved ones. However, it also presents increased risks for off-duty accidents and injuries.
Why Risk Management Matters: On & Off Duty
Risk Management aligns with the Department of the Air Force's Strategic Safety Plan. It prepares Airmen, Guardians, and civilians to make risk-informed decisions, both on and off duty.
Think about it this way: you meticulously plan and manage risks in your daily work. That same mindset is crucial for your off-duty activities. Taking a moment to identify potential hazards and implementing preventative measures can make all the difference.
What's the Risk?
The Air Force Safety Center tracks injuries during the 101 Critical Days of Summer. Based on data from 2024, here are the leading causes of off-duty injuries:
- Motor vehicle accidents remain a top concern. Speeding, alcohol, and distracted driving are major contributors.
- Competitive Sports: Enjoying sports but stay aware of the risks.
- Incidental/Routine Activities: Even everyday activities can lead to injuries.
- Exercise/Calisthenics: Make sure to hydrate and stretch properly.
Good News: We're Making Progress!
Between 2020 and 2024, the overall number of injuries during the 101 Critical Days of Summer decreased by 21%. This positive trend demonstrates that our efforts to promote safety awareness and risk management are working.
Simple Steps for a Safer Summer:
- Plan Ahead: Don't rush into any activity without considering potential hazards.
- Assess the Risks: What could go wrong? Identify potential dangers.
- Make Informed Decisions: Based on your assessment, decide how to mitigate the risks.
- Implement Controls: Take action to reduce the risks (e.g., wearing a seatbelt, using a designated driver, wearing a helmet).
- Supervise Activities: Monitor the situation and adjust your plans as needed.
