WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- The Depot Maintenance Legacy Systems (DMLS) Program Management Office (PMO) Information Assurance (IA) team took the reins in modernizing the DMLS Information Technology (IT) backbone.
Through joint efforts with stakeholders including Headquarters Air Force (HAF), Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC)/A4/10/A4NL Cloud One, and the 309th Software Engineering Group, the PMO has decommissioned three legacy Air Force systems in Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service (EMASS) over the last six months.
The first of these decommissioned systems was the Repairability Forecast Model (RFM). The legacy part availability system was in production since the 1970s. The aged system’s requirements were absorbed by the Material Support Division Information System through an ongoing Logistics Information Technology Strike Team Consolidation Effort. This subsumption allowed the decommissioning of the system’s Authority to Operate (ATO) in EMASS.
The next system decommissioned in EMASS was Depot Maintenance Workload Planning and Control System (DMWPCS). DMWPCS, another legacy system, was previously maintained on a Defense Information Service Agency (DISA) supported mainframe. The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) primary focus has been on improving the common IT user experience within the OSD IT enterprise. Implemented into production in 1979, the system went through a cloud migration to Microsoft Azure, ensuring future sustainment using C#.
Finally, the Aircraft Maintenance Production/Compression Report System (AMREP), was developed and deployed in 1997 and converted to a web application in 2001. AMREP was hosted in the DISA facility in Oklahoma City until the modernization effort was completed. Now a fleet management system called Modern-AMREP and powered by Kessel Run’s Enclave Continuous-ATO (CATO) in the Rapid Cyber Acquisition boundary means the legacy ATO system is decommissioned.
The DMLS IA team has been working cohesively alongside all stakeholders to remain compliant with Information System Security Manager and Information System Security Officer duties as outlined in DoDI 8500.01: Cybersecurity; 8510.01: RMF for DoD IT and AFI 17-101, RFM for AF IT throughout the major effort.
