WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Wright-Patterson airmen selected for promotion to chief master sergeant were honored during the annual recognition ceremony April 10 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
The Air Force selected 503 senior master sergeants for promotion to chief master sergeant out of 2,275 eligible candidates during the most recent promotion cycle, resulting in a selection rate of 22.1 percent.
Chief Master Sgt. James “Bill” Fitch command chief of Air Force Materiel Command and guest speaker for the ceremony, shared personal stories that shaped his leadership philosophy and offered advice to the newly promoted chiefs.
"As a leader, we often get asked about the secrets to success," Fitch said. "For me, it’s my 'A-Ha moment' — a moment when I realized the importance of attitude, humility and altruism. Attitude is infectious; people will gravitate towards you. A humble mind and heart will earn respect, and if you maintain an altruistic approach for the betterment of others and the organization, you’ll be focused on what is really important."
Chief Master Sgt. Tessa Fontaine, 88th Air Base Wing command chief, also congratulated the newest chiefs and encouraged them to embrace their new roles with pride while continuing to serve with dedication.
"It’s been an honor to celebrate each of you," she said. "I hope you leave tonight knowing this is something you truly deserve — something you’ve worked hard for and that will stay with you throughout your career. This may be your final promotion, but it’s more than just that. It’s a commitment — to lead, to mentor, to guide others and to be the voice of our enlisted force. From this point forward, you will forever be called Chief."
