MAXWELL AFB-GUNTER ANNEX, Ala. -- In August 2023 the Agile Services Office (ASO) within the Business and Enterprise Systems Services Management Division undertook the project of migrating Capability Delivery Teams (CDTs), formerly Program Management Offices. The offices were leveraging Microsoft's Azure DevOps (ADO) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) into the BES Atlassian Toolset (BAT), one of the premier Agile Software Development support systems in the Air Force. These projects, affected by the upcoming sunset of ADO/TFS, began their migration into the BAT to support continued Agile Software Development Lifecycle practices to accomplish their missions.
In April 2024, the ASO used the experience gained through previous successful migration efforts to migrate the Integrated Maintenance Data Systems (IMDS) project into the BAT.
IMDS is an Air Force enterprise-level family of systems focused on scheduling and maintenance activities for multiple types of weapons systems. It provides virtual access to centralized maintenance data for effective and efficient management of weapons systems’ maintenance worldwide.
When IMDS initially transitioned from waterfall software development to an Agile software development methodology, support software was implemented within the CDT to enable Agile meetings and ceremonies, team collaboration, ticketing systems for bugs and requirements, knowledge management, security, and testing. IMDS, in response to Microsoft’s decision to sunset ADO/TFS, determined the best route was to migrate to the BAT for their Agile software development needs. Migration included data exports from the former system being transferred into the BAT, providing continuity of program information. IMDS will also be gaining the security of the BAT and its surrounding Cloud One environment.
Successful migration by the system engineers in the ASO accommodated the ongoing development efforts and release schedule with no adverse impact. Engineers sustained the wartime readiness and operational support that IMDS is responsible for, including aircraft, trainers, simulators, missiles, intercontinental ballistic missiles, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and support equipment maintenance activities at worldwide operating bases, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command.
