HILL AIR FORCE BASE – Employees from Hill joined forces with community members in acts of service as part of September’s National Day of Service.
Volunteers took a shift at the Deseret Mill and Pasta facility in Kaysville. While serving there, 26 Team Hill members packaged 13,775 pounds of pasta products, enough to make about 110,000 meal servings.
The volunteers took the fresh product that is produced onsite and packaged it for the needy in the local community and around the world. A staff member said a portion of food produced that day would be sent to refugee camps serving displaced Ukrainians.
Hill volunteers also teamed with personnel from the managed wireless solutions company OptConnect to form a 62-person workforce to work at the Layton American Legion Post 87. They refreshed and revitalized the post, which has supported veterans and community members for decades.
Most of the inside work consisted of repairing, repainting and resealing log walls that had gaps in places large enough to extend fingers through. Outside, the volunteers pulled weeds, pruned back trees and bushes, removed stumps, leveled the ground, added new plants, laid mulch, relocated and rebuilt a horseshoe pit and replaced fencing.
Capt. Jeffrey Larsen, 388th Fighter Wing Chaplain and coordinator for both service projects, said working together created a unity and a meaningful tie with each other and the community.
