Division moves hypobaric altitude chamber to Lackland

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The Agile Combat Support Directorate’s Simulators Division, recently spearheaded an effort to relocate a hypobaric altitude chamber from Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida to the 344th Training Squadron Career Enlisted Aviator Center of Excellence hangar at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
 
The chamber will provide low oxygen, and low pressure training, which is critical for Airmen in pilot and aircrew career fields.
 
“This move was truly a team effort,” said Elaine Dazzio, the Aeromedical and Physiology Training Systems Program Manager within the division. “In addition to the functional program managers providing on the ground support at Lackland, the program office team in Simulators awarded the contract modification for the move in record time. Without our combined efforts, this irreplaceable capability [hypobaric altitude chamber] would have been lost.”

The cost to purchase a new hypobaric chamber and install it at Lackland, would have been approximately $10-20 million. The contract modification to move the chamber and install it at Lackland, was more cost efficient at $355,000.
