HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Military and civilian federal employees here have several commuter and rideshare options when transiting to the installation.

All federal employees are eligible to receive a subsidy of up to $325 per month to assist with expenses relating to mass transit use. Mass transit includes the use of trains, subways, busses and vanpools. Carpools, Ubers, bike rentals and parking fees are not considered mass transit and are not covered under the subsidy.

“Prior to COVID, Hanscom had a very robust vanpool program with 46 active vanpools and more than 350 riders commuting to the base from all over New England,” said Scott Sheehan, 66th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental engineer. “We are eager to revive this program.”

Military and federal civilians interested in applying for the subsidy should email the Hanscom Commuter Program for instructions. Contractors are not eligible for the federal subsidy but can participate in the various programs offered. Contractors are encouraged to contact their human resource departments to learn about potential financial benefits that may be offered by their company.

Vanpools

Vanpools are operated by Commute with Enterprise. Employees seeking vanpools in their area can complete the request process on the website.

Sheehan said flexibility is key to establishing a successful vanpool, as working hours may need to be adjusted to match other riders. He also noted the subsidy often covers the full cost of the vanpool, making it a great option for personnel looking to save money on commuting costs.

Concord station shuttle service

The 66th Logistics Readiness Squadron operates a shuttle service between the installation and Concord station, which is a stop along the Fitchburg Line of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail. Commuters interested in riding the shuttle can find more information and register by visiting the LRS SharePoint page.

Carpool matching

The Hanscom Commuter eBoard is a self-serve carpool matching site on Microsoft Teams. Hanscom personnel can email the Hanscom Commuter Program to receive the access code to join. Those interested in carpooling can communicate with others to establish or find carpools. Vanpools can also advertise open seats on the site.
