WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – To help celebrate the final weeks of the school year, Airmen and civilians with the Special Programs Division within the Fighters and Advanced Aircraft Directorate (AFLCMC/WAG) volunteered to help with a local elementary school’s field day.

The volunteers partnered with Edison Elementary School in Dayton, Ohio, to help them execute the event for the students. Edison does not have many parental volunteers to help pull off large-scale events.

“This is our third year helping out with this event, but it marks my first time participating,” said Morgan Carroll, AFLCMC/WAG contracting officer. “We’re assisting with the field day here and there should be about 300 kids participating in the field day. We’re very excited to do our part and help them have a fun field day.”

For Carroll, volunteering at the event is meaningful.

“Without us providing assistance they wouldn’t be able to host a field day for the students,” she explains. “It’s our way of helping the students have a field day like many of us did while we were in school.”

Some of the planned activities included a sack race, cornhole and tug-of-war, among many other games and stations. The students were encouraged to have fun with the games and to playfully compete with their classmates.

Wanana Miller, AFLCMC/WAG financial specialist, volunteered to man the 50-yard dash station and views the event as a win-win situation for the students and the volunteers.

“I love to give back to the community in any way possible and getting to play with the children is a great time,” she added. “Our organization tries to do multiple events throughout the year. It builds morale and helps the community at the same time.”

She hopes that the children’s biggest take away from the day is knowing that there are people out there who care about them and want them to succeed.

“I hope they see that people will take the time out of their day to play and talk with them,” Miller said. “I hope we make a difference in their lives, and they take away as much joy as we do.”
