Members of the 96th Logistics Readiness Squadron recently donated approximately 200 hygiene supply kits to local homeless shelters in need during COVID-19.

Among the collected items were cloth facemasks, deodorant, gloves, toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap.

“I know many people in the community are having a hard time dealing with the pandemic,” said Master Sgt. Cindria Mizell, project lead.  “For me, it’s always a blessing to help others.  I decided to reach out to local shelters to see what they needed.”

Once word got out about the endeavor, squadron members dropped off requested items in boxes placed in 96th LRS work areas, over a two-week period.  Next, volunteers bagged the items into kits.

“My squadron teammates were happy to help put the kits together,” Mizell said.  “They appreciated the opportunity to help the community.”

The kits were then delivered to the shelters.  Mizell said they were well received.

“Some of the recipients cried happy tears and thanked us for what we did,” she said.  “Others, speaking from their experiences, said they were grateful that thoughtful people still exist.”

One woman’s sentiment stood out for Mizell.

“She said COVID-19 has brought us all together and helped us remember how important it is to be able to lean on each other for support,” she said.  “It was heartwarming to hear.”

Kevin Partlow, 96th LRS deputy director, said the squadron has a history of helping its neighbors.

“Our squadron assisted our community many times, in many ways,” he said.    “We will continue to support our team members whenever we’re able.  Our motto is to leave things better than we found them, which includes our community.  Our support will surely continue.”

Squadron volunteers plan to organize more donation projects.
